They may not look like beautiful works of art, and few people will mistake it for an actual Gibson, but they have a sort of hot-rod, gritty, generally bad ass look to them. I also think Univoxes are probably some of the coolest looking guitars of that bottom tier of LP copies. But, they make some pretty awesome sounds, as their pickups were/are very interesting. If you're an aggressive player, and you take advantage of the flimsiness of the guitar and use the neck/body as a trem, you're going to wind up with a broken guitar eventually. The tend to crack right at the heel, where the neck bolts to the body. I am not a gentle player, and I've taken them on tour only to find that they don't make it 4 or 5 weeks of playing every night. In my experience, Univoxes are incredibly fragile guitars. In fact, the case alone makes your purchase a real fine grab. To be sure, you got a really amazing deal. But this is by no means a statement of fact, only a hypothesis. So, essentially, I think the Gimme replaced the Mother, and the Custom replaced the Deluxe. That's why I think those two ran concurrently, where as the Gimme was U1985 and U1986 and the Custom was U1885 and U1886. Likewise, the Deluxe was U1882 and U1883. You'll note that the Mother model numbers were U1982 and U1983 (again model numbers, not years). The Mother/Rhythm & Blues and Deluxe were offered from around '69 to '75, and then the Gimme and Customs replaced those. All in all, Univox had four Les Paul copies, and I believe they offered two versions at a time. I say that because the Custom model seems to be a variant of the Univox Gimme. Judging by the model numbers of the Custom model, I'd guess yours is 1976 - early 80s. You can find your guitar in the Guitars section here: Univox Guitars and BassesĪs you'll see, yours is a Custom model (view pics of the sunburst, and you'll see what I mean). I used to play Univoxes, and the best site I've ever come across for Univox info is. Frets are probably low because it's an old guitar and they're worn.
